Dr. Z
- DESCRIPTION
The Dr. Z Maz 8 used the preamp section from the venerable Maz line of amps, but reduces the wattage enabling you to get that Maz tone at MUCH more manageable volume levels. Don't get us wrong, though... There was plenty of volume here for an 8 watt amp, but you'd have a much better time dealing with sound guys, engineers, or your significant others at home with the Maz 8 that you typically will with an 18 or 38.
With the Maz 8, Dr. Z chose a single ended EL84 circuit for the power section that can be run in two modes via a rear panel switch. Pentode (about 9 or 10 watts) or Triode (about 5 or 6 watts). In Pentode mode, it was a typical Maz 18 type sound, with all the chime and smooth low end we all know and love with plenty of dynamic range for both rock and country. In the Triode mode the output is slightly less than Pentode and the tone gets a little fatter with a more vintage tone and feel.
The footswitchable EQ bypass allowed you to remove the tone stack (Treble, Mid, and Bass) which increased the gain and thickened the sound up a bit.
Like the other Maz amps, the Maz 8 had the "Cut" knob that was essentially a tone knob for the output section.
The DrZ Maz 8 came standard with an effects loop and the EQ bypass feature.
